Painted Ladies Evanston & Old Irving Park

In 1893, Frank Lloyd Wright founded his architectural practice in Oak Park, a quiet, semi-rural village on the Western edges Most of these homes were originally painted in bright red, yellow, and oranges, but as the years passed and they were painted over in battleship grays using left over navy paint during World Wars I and II. It wasn’t until the 1960’s, when artist Butch Kardum began the trend of combining blues and greens on the exterior of his Italianate-style Victorian San Francisco home. The trend caught on. Years later, in Chicago, competitions are held on a yearly basis for the Finest Painted Lady in Chicago.
