Over the years, working as paint contractors in Chicago, many of our customers have found themselves living in confined spaces, perhaps an historical home or an urban apartment. What they often want is to create the illusion of space, to make a number of rooms, or perhaps a particular nook or cranny, appear larger than they really are.
The conventional wisdom is that if you want to make a room look larger, simply paint it white. That’s one approach, but it’s certainly not the only one. Picking a paint color for a room is really like choosing a type of chocolate. If you pick what you want, you really can’t go wrong.
With that in mind, we’d like to pass on a few ideas for expanding those small spaces through your choice of colors.

Be bold with sharp colors – One of the best ways to make a small space look larger is to use brighter, sharper colors, as opposed to duller ones. Suggestions include electric blues, yellows and greens, or some combination of these to create a feeling of openness.
Use accents – Don’t be afraid of accents. Not everything is a room has to be the same color. For example, paint the inside of a bookshelf or a window sill in an accent color to add a feeling of depth to the room.
Create a focal wall – Again, not every wall in a room has to be the same color. So, paint one wall in a darker color so that in the mind’s eye it tends to recede and create the illusion of depth.
Spice up the kitchen – One way to expand a cramped kitchen is to paint the walls in a light color and the shelves or cabinets in a darker hue. Try light green walls and a darker green on the shelves or cabinets.
Don’t ignore white – Light off-white shades are a great choice for rooms with low ceilings.
Dark hues have a place – If you’re painting a library or some other personal space, a darker color can create a feeling of warmth and comfort.
